Picking the Right Cat or Kitten
When choosing a kitten or cat to bring into your family or home, you
should consider the following things :
- 10 - 15 years of caring and loving, this includes vet visits and attention
- If you have young children, then they will need to be taught
how to handle a kitten or cat, show the cat respect and give the cat lots of care
- Your cat will need lots of care such as food, water, a litter box,
a scratch post or/and pad and a safe warm place to sleep
- Someone will have to be responsible for cleaning and changing a litter
box and make sure that there is always a fresh supply of water and food
Solutions to Behavior Problems
Play Aggression :
This is usually caused by the owners by playing and brushing a cat or kitten.
Don't use your hands and feet to brush or play with your cat. Have play toys
for your cat, especially a kitten or young cat.
Pole toys are great toys for cats and remember that hands and feet are
off limits for a plaything.
Defensive Aggression :
Cats and kittens can easily become over stimulated when playing. Once again
use play toys to play with your kitten or cat, not your hands and feet.
Misdirected Aggression :
This type of aggression happens when your cat sees something that upsets him/her
and he/she cannot get to it, like wanting to get something outside but a window is
preventing the cat. Once this happens the cat lashes out at whoever is nearby.
Try closing blinds or removing the object he or she sees if possible.
Territorial Aggression :
This type of aggression will need to be dealt by a professional behaviorist
who will do an assessment on your cat's behavior. Never hit your cat or kitten as
they will not understand and this will not discourage the aggression.
