Picking the Right Dog
When choosing a dog, as a pet, the look should not be your only consideration.
You may want to consider the following things before choosing the special
dog to bring into and be part of your family. Remember that dogs are
just like people ; they each have their own personalities and may have
a different set of needs.
- Size ~ the dog you choose should fit in the environment you live
- Trainability ~ some dogs are easier to train than others, keep this
in mind
- Noise ~ dogs can have different noise levels, they should fit in the
environment where you live in
- Good with children ~ if you have children in your household choose a
dog with characteristics that will fit with your children
Solutions To Behavior Problems
Separation Anxiety :
Do not punish your dog for a behavior problem unless you catch your dog in
the act. A dog will not understand why he/she is being punished unless he/she
is caught in the act. When you are away from home try to use a kennel, make it a warm
and safe place for your dog, don't use it as a form of punishment. Be sure
to leave toys for your dog to play with.
Lack of Environmental Stimulation :
Dogs need adequate exercise and stimulation,
especially a puppy or young dog. Try leaving toys for your dog to play
with when you are gone or leave a radio on, or even a second pet if that is
possible. Do not buy toys that look like your furniture or that are made
from the same product as things in your house, because you do not want your
dog to chew in them.
Barrier Frustration :
Do not punish your puppy or dog by putting him or
her in a closed room or pen. When a dog sees something desirable on the
other side of a barrier, the dog will try to get it and causing even more destruction.
A dog will chew a door so he can get the more desirable objects on the
other side of a barrier. Remember a dog should only be punished if caught in the
act of a bad behavior, otherwise they do not associate your anger with
what they did, they will act shy because they can sense you are upset
with them, but they won't understand why you are punishing them.
